Thank you for attending this veterinary continuing education event and Zoetis SAM Summit
If the notion of changing the classifications in your software, moving items from one category to another, or redoing your chart of accounts seems looming, take heart. Having changed over several practices, I can tell you from first hand experience that this job can be completed in about 8 hours of work. The secret is to commit yourself to the task and lock yourself away from interuptions until the job is complete. Block out 2 hours at a time, for any more time than that and your eyes become sleepy and you’ll be unproductive. Two hours, four days, that’s all it will take and then tracking your inventory and benchmarking your practice will be so much easier and so much more meaningful.
The second big job you have in front of you is committing you and your team to a hospital-wide standard of care. Don’t give this exercise lip service, but genuinely invest in what you know to be good for pets and people too. Your job isn’t to sell more stuff, but to give owners and pets a shot at a safe, affordable way to live longer and happier together. Figure out how you and your team can do that and you will be the most popular vet in your area; more importantly, you’ll be the most enjoyable veterinary office at which to work.
Ask For Help If You Need It. Your Team Needs You To Succeed
If you find yourself in a pickle about any of this. REACH OUT. I don’t rant and rave for the fun of it. I rant and rave because, after 20 years of working in veterinary hospitals I believe in getting one’s act together. I believe in organization and training, not just to keep things neat and tidy, but to keep patients safe, to keep clients happy, to help team members live up to everything that they can be, to have a happy and productive work environment and to grow oneself as a better leader and a person. You will attend a lot of continuing education in your day, but you won’t find two veterinary practice managers as committed to your success as Brenda Tassava and me, Bash Halow. we are driven to help because we know, first hand, how valuable it is for everyone involved if you get better at what you do.
