Marketing strategy and search engine optimization include creating a list of keywords
As explained in the How To Create A Keyword Strategy For Your Business, your job in search engine optimization is to teach Google about who you are and what you do.
To this end, we’d like to show you how to use the keyword generator included with Google Ads as a way of discovering the words and phrases most people use when searching a particular topic of interest. By including these words in your title and content and making sure that you demonstrate how these keywords are related to your business (that is to say they are used relevantly in the context of what you are writing about), then you can increase the likelihood that your business will rise higher in search engine ranks.
Marketing Strategy begins with a list of your services and the most frequently used keywords that people use when searching for such services.
To access the keyword generator
- Go to www.adwords.google.com
- In the upper right hand corner of the page, click ‘create an account’
- Under ‘Welcome to Google Ad Words’ click ‘Skip the Set Up Guide
- Google will prompt you for some information. Note that if you haven’t used a google email account to log into the adwords, you’ll be redirected to set up a google account prior to completing the log in to Google ad words. Not to worry, just follow the prompts through to completion
- When you have completed part IV, you’ll be at the Welcome to Adwords screen. At the top of the page, you’ll see four choices, Home, Campaigns, Opportunities and Tools. Select the pull down menu beneath Tools and select Keyword Planner
Access the list of services that you created as part of the exercise in How To Create a Keyword Strategy for your Business, then follow these instructions:
- On the Keyword Planner page, beneath the heading ‘Find New Keywords’, select ‘search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category
- Explore the screening tools in the planner. For example, you can eliminate keywords that are already imbedded on your site.
- You can get a feel for what words are included in your competitors site by adding their site’s name to the ‘your landing page’ field. The resulting keywords are the ones that Google matched as relevant to the content in your competitor’s site.
