Veterinary continuing education at this year’s CVC Kansas City won’t be a passive experience, but will draw members out of the audience to work with instructors in small ‘expert’ groups, learn and laugh in late night sessions, and speak out in the new DVM Full Circle learning forums.
Attendees Rank CVC Continuing Education ‘Best Ever’
This approach to continuing education was already tested this year at CVC Washington DC and set a record for positive audience feedback. Comments like, ‘best ever’, ‘extremely engaging’, and ‘clearly these instructors are committed to helping us learn’ underlined both the value of the status quo and proved that these new directions in audience engagement are working.

CVC continuing education has always hosted an ‘Ask the Expert’ luncheon for clinical topics, but this will be the first year that a management track is added. The concept was tested earlier this year in CVC Washington when a small working group of 10 practice leaders (a mixture of veterinarian owners and managers) and I talked through issues on team motivation with an emphasis on one area in particular: what to do with team members who won’t get on board with change. The conversation was fast paced and packed with valuable information. It’s a great testament to our focus that every leader present articulated a personal action plan of what to do when they returned to their practice. To me, that’s veterinary continuing education with a clear return on investment: a chance to identify a problem, work through a solution with an expert in the field, and return home with an action plan.
The late night session, Time Suckers, drew a large audience in DC and will be repeated at CVC Kansas City. We’ll cover the top ten management tasks that drain away our valuable leadership time and the best leadership habits and technology to help us streamline things. There are no proceeding notes written for this session, but one extremely prolific note taker, Dr. Denise Nickodemus of Lakemont Veterinary Clinic, offered to serve as ‘secretary’ for the session. You can read her detailed Time Sucker notes here.
Innovative, Dynamic Veterinary Continuing Education
CVC Kansas City’s new way of learning is an important advance in veterinary continuing education. In a digital world, where information is ubiquitous and instant, CVC is rightly zeroing in on the learning forum: making it positive, interactive, diverse, multi-focal, and just plain fun. The education experience becomes more impactful. Attendees don’t just sit and watch slides, but are invited to speak up on their own, work with others, meet in small working groups, and learn in environs other than a dimmed convention ballroom. I invite you to join all of us at CVC Kansas City and CVC San Diego later this year, not just for the best in veterinary continuing education, but the best experience in veterinary continuing education.
